A Case of scrub typhus accompanied by meningitis




Abstract
In Korea, scrub typhus occurs approximately 2,000cases annually, and in most cases, it predominantly occurs from October to November. This disease shows various courses from inapparent infection to death. It is an acute febrile disease
characterized by
symptoms of headache, fever, chills, rashes, myalgia and signs of skin eruption, crust formation , lymphadenopathy. It is introduced into the body when bitten by chiggers which are infected with Rickettsia tsutsugamushi, the causative agent. Due
to
generalized vasculitis, it may cause fatal complications such as pneumonia, shock, meningitis and encephalitis in severe cases.
We report a case which shows such typical signs of scrub typhus as fever, chills, headach, rashes, crust formation, which accompanies generalized convulsion, ataxic gait, dysarthria, impaired mental function, delusion, and Boryung type R.
tsutsugamushi,
a new serologic type, was isolated from CSF of the patient.
